Research areas

Axis 1 – Microorganism Biology (BIM): Molecular, Structural, Genetic and Functional Approaches

This research area focuses on the biology of environmental, commensal and pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, bacteriophages, archaea, viruses, yeasts, fungi and parasites) at the molecular and cellular levels, exploring their genetic and regulatory mechanisms, structures, physiology, adaptive processes, diversity and evolution. Research aims to understand the fundamental mechanisms underlying microorganism replication in order to better understand their adaptive capacities.

Axis 2 – Host–Microorganism Interactions, Microbiota, Pathogenesis, Immunity and Antimicrobial Resistance (IMPIA)

This research area focuses on host–microorganism interactions and interactions with vectors, microbial communities, the dialogue between microorganisms, pathogens and their target cells, pathogenesis and host determinants, the host immune response, and the impact of infectious diseases on chronic diseases. Research also aims to investigate the molecular basis of antimicrobial resistance and the impact of antimicrobial use on microbial populations.

Axis 3 – Infectious Diseases: Dynamics, Epidemiology, Diagnostic, Preventive and Therapeutic Strategies, Global Health (MIDESS)

This research area focuses on the epidemiology and evolutionary dynamics of pathogens and infectious diseases in human and animal populations and in ecosystems through a One Health approach. Research also aims to develop and evaluate innovative diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic strategies in infectious diseases, particularly through clinical research tools. Research also draws on implementation science, modelling, health economic analyses and public health policies.
